Pegasus Bay Winery is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery located in the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury, New Zealand. Founded in 1985 by Ivan and Christine Donaldson, Pegasus Bay has become one of New Zealand’s most respected wineries, known for producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.
The winery’s story began in the early 1970s when Ivan Donaldson, a neurologist by profession, developed a passion for wine after receiving Hugh Johnson’s book “Wine” as a gift from Christine. Pegasus Bay’s vineyard, planted in 1985, is largely ungrafted, producing ultra-low yields of grapes with loose bunches and small berries. This approach contributes to the intensity and complexity of their wines. The winery focuses on classic varietals, with Pinot Noir and Riesling being their flagship wines, each accounting for about one-third of their production.
The Donaldson family is deeply involved in all aspects of the business. Ivan oversees viticulture, while Christine tends to the winery’s extensive gardens. Their four sons have joined the family business, each contributing their expertise: Matthew as the winemaker, Edward handling marketing, Michael managing local sales, and Paul serving as the general manager.
Pegasus Bay is renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation. They produce a range of wines including Sauvignon Semillon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Merlot Cabernet blends. The winery also offers a reserve range, including their acclaimed “Prima Donna” Pinot Noir.
The winery’s reputation has grown significantly over the years, with wine critic Michael Cooper rating it as “Canterbury’s top winery” in his Wine Atlas of New Zealand. Pegasus Bay has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s top 5 producers and is known for its adventurous, non-mainstream wine styles.
