Bell Hill is a boutique winery located in the Weka Pass area of North Canterbury, New Zealand. Founded in 1997 by Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen, this small, quality-focused vineyard has quickly gained a reputation for producing some of New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.
The vineyard is situated on an old limestone quarry, providing a unique terroir that contributes to the distinctive character of their wines. Bell Hill’s approach to viticulture and winemaking is meticulous and hands-on, with a strong focus on biodynamic practices and minimal intervention.
Their plantings are densely spaced and cover just 2 hectares, allowing for intense focus on each vine. The winery produces only three wines: a Pinot Noir, a Chardonnay, and the Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir.
Bell Hill’s wines have garnered critical acclaim both domestically and internationally. They are known for their elegance, complexity, and ability to express the unique limestone terroir of their site. The limited production ensures exclusivity, with their wines often allocated to a select group of customers and high-end restaurants.
Marcel and Sherwyn’s dedication to quality and their site-specific approach has positioned Bell Hill as a leader in New Zealand’s fine wine scene, particularly for Burgundian varietals. Their commitment to excellence continues to drive Bell Hill’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s most prestigious small wineries.
